Collaborating with AI to Engage Information Literacy

Submitter: Jeanne Beatrix Law, Kennesaw State U

The experiment:

In this low-stakes assignment, students are asked to evaluate relevant and reliable data. First, students read an historical text (such as An Appeal for Human Rights, 1960). They then focus on one aspect of the original document and search a government source for for that issue (example: healthcare disparity). The instructor then provides a series of related prompts for students to deploy with their AI Assistants. Students reflect and discuss the triangulation of sources and the reliability of each.

Results:

My goal for working with AI in first-year writing for the past three semesters has been to intentionally cross-pollinate AI-infused assignments and civil/human rights issues. My First-year courses are themed around these issues. Students have responded overwhelmingly positive regarding my introduction to prompt engineering as well as engendering their collaboration with AI assistants. My mantra is: AI won’t take your job; but, a colleague who knows how to collaborate with AI just might.” I have also developed more in-depth rhetorical prompt engineering activities, processes, and models for students to engage with to increase their writerly growth.
