The experiment:
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
- Improve AI literacy
- Form ethical and learning-oriented AI-writing practices
- Deepen understanding of classroom AI policy and its relation to course learning goals.
OVERVIEW: This lesson plan aims to help students develop AI Literacy and generate frameworks for distinguishing between educationally helpful and harmful AI-writing practices. It asks students to consider a range of ethically and pedagogically questionable GenAI use-cases in order to develop understanding of classroom AI policies and their relationship to course learning goals. Instructors from other universities can and should tailor these scenarios so they draw attention to the potential ambiguities or limitations of one’s own classroom’s AI policy, course learning goals, and university academic integrity policies.
Results: It worked well, overall! Students left the class with a concrete list of the principles that allow them to distinguish between permissible and impermissible GenAI habits (those that promote or undermine their learning goals).
